Tulip Display – Tulips on The Island of Wishes

This year’s parterre depicts a beach party scene against a backdrop of a blue sky, green ocean and tranquil beach in summer.  The parterre looks like a paradise, where groups of animals are living leisurely lives and enjoying the grace of Mother Nature.

Amid scorching summer heat, birds are freely flying through the air with the sun high in the sky, aspiring to bring hope across all corners of the globe. Two dolphins are happily playing in waves, sometimes even jumping out of water and dancing in pair.  There are also a host of sea creatures including seahorses, whales and octopuses swimming and splashing about together with little whales and baby octopuses in the middle of the sea.  The wonderful combination of wind and wave sounds is just like playing a symphony of summer in creation of a fantastic atmosphere. Under intense sunlight, one can see many animals including sea turtles, hermit crabs, coral clams and common kingfishers basking on the beach, a scene of bliss. The parterre is a mosaic of thousands of flowers and plants.  Visitors may enjoy the cute animal sculptures and the colourful rainbow up close, and pose on them for a good photo.  At night, the special effects of illumination and music push the atmosphere to its peak.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has been supporting the Flower Show since 2013.  It became a major sponsor in 2014 and has since been financing the mosaiculture projects by students in a bid to bring the Flower Show to every sector of the community.

Autumn Fairy Tale

The autumn sun is calm and cosy, and a golden hue radiates from the fields.   The garden is full of ripe fruits and vibrantly coloured pumpkins surrounded by multi-coloured flowers and balls of Hydrangea florets.  The myriad colours are interwoven into the picturesque beauty of fairy tales, so that visitors may appreciate the joy of a lavish harvest in the autumn season.  From a distance, the corrugated terraces resemble strips of golden ribbons laid in the fields. The red maple on both sides of the terraces stand testimony to the changing season.  In this scenery of bountiful harvest, farmers are busy tending to wheat fields, sweet cantaloupes and matured corn.  Amid the faint aroma of grain products, visitors are immersed in an autumn fairy tale.

Special Theme Flowers and Edible Plants Garden

Hydrangeas denote “friendship” and “reunion” in floral meanings.  The design theme of this plot is about Enggie Pup and Artti Kitty taking a little wooden train to travel around, mesmerized by distinctively impressive Hydrangeas of varying species.  The plot is lushly planted with the riotously coloured Hydrangeas, which produce a breathtakingly beautiful waterfall of fragrant flowers.  As the train runs through a tunnel of thousands of Moth Orchids, one will easily forget the hassles of our world amid a strong floral scent.  Meanwhile, various edible plants are planted in the plot, making us recollect the ancient elegant practice of eating and drinking outdoor on mats under the moon.

“Delightful Green Homes with an Abundance of Blessings” is the theme of the Housing Department’s landscape garden. Upon passing through the “Heart-to-Heart” archway, visitors may take a leisurely stroll around the garden to enjoy an exquisite 3D heartshaped blooming parterre. The design together with the joyful ambience suggests the Housing Authority’s (HA) attentiveness to the public through building sweet homes with them over the past five decades. With a long history of cultural exchanges between the East and the West, Macao is endowed with a distinctive cultural identity. In the centre of the exhibition area is a golden lotus-shaped installation, signifying Macao’s prosperity under the support of the motherland. Small junks return with a fishing harvest to the harbour with Hydrangeas in full bloom, a testimony to Macao people’s bliss since the reunification with the motherland.

The theme of the mosaiculture display is about the legend of a chromatic phoenix. Stepping on a stone, a phoenix with Ganoderma held in mouth stares back at the beautiful views of blooming flowers and auspicious clouds amid a colourful haze. Such a design features the beauty of fortune animals in Chinese myths, while expressing the concept of “low-carbon nature and ecological sustainability”. Adorned by means of floral insertion and pasting, the installation in the shape of a phoenix ingeniously blends gardening elements with floral arrangement techniques, where various distinctive species of Begonia are adopted together with such plant materials as cut flowers, immortal flowers and branches, making it look like a real life phoenix. With “blooming” as the design theme for the ground vegetation, the exhibit is created into a patterned mosaiculture display with natural floral features, with a view to implementing our garden landscaping idea. The tail feathers of the phoenix displays the pattern of ripples, embodying the indispensable role of water, the source of life, to nourish everything in the world. The regular pattern at the head of the phoenix gradually emerges as natural floral landscaping in expression of lucidly charming beauty, encapsulating the cultural meaning of “moving hearts and minds in unison by harmonising with the nature”. On the whole, the creation of the mosaiculture display aims to praise the elegance and solemn charm of the art of Chinese gardening, while promoting our traditional culture to sustain its vibrancy. Inspired by these clusters of gorgeously colourful flowers, we will move forward and embrace the bright future ahead in unison.

Bureau of Forestry and Landscaping of Guangzhou Municipality

The design of the garden plot runs along the theme of this year’s Flower Show “Bliss in Bloom”. It is always a blissful moment for stargazers to look up the magnificent Milky Way, marvelling at the wonder of the galaxy in tranquillity.

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpiece “The Starry Night”, we use lots of lines and contrastive colours in a blending of reality and imagination when presenting this plot in an effort to create a blissful ambience amid a starry night.

The materials adopted for the garden plot are mainly sod grass rolls. Drawings of stars are made in luminous paint by coloured patterning, with starshaped installations characterised by green elements of embroidered grasses.

Urban Management Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality

Urban Management Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality

Inspired by the Shenzhen Municipality’s unique organic urban layout of integrating “mountains, seas, city and parks”, the design of the garden adopts the presentation techniques of traditional paper-cutting, with an aim to, by extensive folding and cutting of spaces, extend the entire site from a two-dimensional surface to a three-dimensional artwork of paper-cutting rich in spatial artistic features. The garden’s major structure, Pavilion of Paper-cutting, carries the meaning of mountains, while both the wave shaped planting boxes and arch symbolise oceans. With a profusion of flowers and shrub planting across the garden, all such features epitomise the Shenzhen Municipal’s proactive initiative to implement its beautiful blueprint of “integrating the city with mountains and seas, and building a green and livable Shenzhen”.
